The genus Alternanthera belongs to the family Amaranthaceae, and are widely distributed in Asia. Many of the species under this genus can adapt to underwater growth, hence very popular in aquarium trade. Hobbyists prefer this plant for its bright colour and its easy adaptation to aquarium conditions under medium to high light intensity.

Alternanthera reneckii ‘Lilacina’

A very good plant for beginners and serious hobbyists for background settings. The plants is popularly known as ‘Purple Lila’ in aquarium trade. The leaves are with pointed tips (broadly lanceolate) with reddish brown on upper side and lilac underneath. Medium to high intensity light with copious CO2 injection (20 ppm or mg/liter) can sustain its vibrant growth.
