Hygrophila pinnatifida UK

Original price was: ₹275.Current price is: ₹200./-

This variant of the beautiful Hygrophila pinnatifida from India entered the market under names such as “Hygrophila pinnatifida sp. UK”. In this case the abbreviation does not mean United Kingdom but Uttara Kannada, a district of the Indian state Karnataka where the plant apparently was collected. It differs slightly from the customary H. pinnatifida form that was found in the border region of Goa and Maharashtra. The leaves of Hygrophila pinnatifida “Uttara Kannada” get slightly longer and tend a little more to red coloration. Furthermore they are more pronounced pinnately lobed.

Surely this new form of H. pinnatifida does not differ from the customary one by its requirements and uses. Medium to strong lighting, CO2 addition, complete macro and micronutrient supply and temperatures above 20 °C (optimum: 25-29 °C) are recommended. Hygrophila species are susceptible to potassium deficiency symptoms (pinholes in older leaves). H. pinnatifida can be planted into the ground but also attaches itself by its roots to hard materials. It is easily propagated by cuttings and its many runner-like horizontal shoots. Occasional trimming promotes more compact growth.

Hygrophila pinnatifida “Uttara Kannada” is an interesting plant. As well as customary H. pinnatifida, it can be used for the midground and the hardscape of aquariums.

Description

Hygrophila pinnatifida UK,is an uncommon hygro endemic to India. There it grows on rivulets in the western coastal area on the foot of the Western Ghats .The submersed leaves have a special colour, their upper side is brown to olive green with a light yellowish pattern where the lateral leaf veins fork off the midrib, their underside is of a Burgundy red. When cultivated submersed, H. pinnatifida UK develops upright shoots as well as runner-like creeping ones, which can attach to rocks or driftwood with their roots. At the end of these multiply ramified shoots, upright sprouts develop. They can remain rather short for a longer period of time, looking like a rosette then. The stems are of a brown colour and rather tough.H. pinnatifida does ok under moderate light, however, more intensive lighting helps it grow more compact. A compact growth habit can also be furthered by regularly removing the shoot tips. A good nutrient and CO2 supply is recommendable. This Hygrophila is apparently quite susceptible to a potassium deficiency, whose symptoms are small needleprick-like holes in the older leaves.
The substrate seems to be quite unimportant. The plant forms a rather small, not very deep root system. When pulling the plant out of the ground you will see that the roots attach to sand or gravel grains.
